İLKE BÜYÜKDUMAN (Manager)

​Dr Buyukduman earned her BA from Middle East Technical University, Department of Foreign Language Education in 1991. She received her MA and PhD from Yildiz Technical University in the department of Curriculum and Instruction and has been teaching English for more than 20 years. İlke’s academic interests are constructivist instruction, learner autonomy and curriculum design. Previously she worked at Yildiz Technical, Istanbul Technical and Ozyegin University English prep schools.

HANDAN BİLİR (Deputy Manager)

Handan received her BA from Middle East Technical University, Department of Foreign Languages Education in 1996, and her MA from Marmara University, Department of Foreign Languages in 2003. She receıved her COTE certificate in 1997. Her academic interests are theme-based instruction, material development and teacher training. Handan has taught English at the prep schools of various universities, including Bilkent University and Işık University.

BRIAN RAMEY (Elementary Level Head)

​Brian received his BA in Social Science with a concentration in education. He received his TESOL certificate in 2006 and is currently studying for an MA in TESOL.  He is interested in student-directed learning and developing constructivist curricula while providing a positive, nurturing environment for his students.

MEHMET AKINCI (Pre-Intermediate Level Head)

​Mehmet earned his BA degree in 2006 and MA degree in 2009 in ELT at Boğaziçi University. He completed his master’s thesis, a study investigating the effectiveness of corpus consultancy in teaching Verb + Noun collocations to first-year ELT students. Mehmet previously worked as an instructor in the Foreign Languages School at Maltepe University for three years. He has attended several national and international workshops and conferences in which he has shared his knowledge about the use of corpus and the power of collocations.

ARDA BAYRAKTAROĞLU (Intermediate Level Head)

Arda earned his BA degree in English Language Teaching from Istanbul University in 1999. He is currently studying for the Cambridge ESOL DELTA. He has been teaching English for 10 years, including two years as an Instructor of English at Okan University. Arda is interested in teaching academic reading and writing skills.

MEHTAP INCE (Upper-Intermediate Level Head)

Mehtap graduated from Boğaziçi University in 2007– with a diploma from the Foreign Language Education Department and a certificate in Linguistics from the Western Languages Department.  First, she worked at Bilkent University Foreign Languages School as an instructor for 2 years. She completed the Cambridge ESOL – ICELT (In-service Certificate of English Language Teaching) at Bilkent University. Then, she worked at Bahçeşehir University Preparatory Program for two years. Mehtap completed the Cambridge ESOL – DELTA (Diploma of English Language Teaching to Adults) in 2010 and she received a Testing and Assessment Certificate from ITI (Istanbul Training Institute).  She is interested in student-centered and computer assisted language teaching.

DESSISLAVA IVANOVA (Pre-Faculty Level Head)

Dessislava has more than a decade of experience in teaching English to international students from all over the world.  She received an MA in Teaching English as a Second Language from Penn State University, USA, where she also took PhD coursework in Applied Linguistics.  Dessislava has taught in the USA, Canada, Turkey and Bulgaria.

AISHA MOHYUDDIN

​Aisha received her dual BA in Political Science and Economics from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.  In 2010 she left her job as a banker in Chicago and came to Istanbul to pursue a career in teaching.  Aisha received her Cambridge CELTA and has been teaching since.  She has experience teaching young learners as well as adults.

AKİF ÇAL

​Akif obtained his BA degree in Foreign Language Education and Certificate of Linguistics from Boğaziçi University in 2007. He continued with his MA degree in English Language Teaching at Boğaziçi University and earned his degree in 2010. He focused on the gap between theory and practice in curriculum implementation in foreign language education in his thesis. He has taught English for five years. He worked at İstanbul Kavram Vocational School in the 2007-2008 academic year and then started work at Eyüboğlu Educational Institutions, where he taught English and Theory of Knowledge. Akif’s academic interests include education and social context, education policy and international education.

ANNA DOROZYNSKA

​Anna holds both a BA in English Language Teaching from Warsaw University Teacher Training College and a CELTA certificate from Cambridge University. She taught English in Scotland, Turkey, Poland and England. Anna has experience teaching both TOEFL and IELTS to medical professionals and university students.

DAMIAN SHERIFF

​After graduating with honors in Philosophy from the University of Reading in 2002, Damian completed his CELTA certification in his hometown of London and has been working in İstanbul as an EFL teacher ever since. He is interested in fostering learner autonomy among his students by means of establishing a strongly student-centered environment in the classroom.

DANIEL OSCHRIN

​Daniel earned his BA in Politics from Whitman College in 2010, where he also worked as a senior Writing Center teacher. He received his CELTA certificate in 2011 from Bilkent University, and worked in the Bilkent preparatory program for two years before moving to Istanbul to work at SEPP.

DAMLA OKAY

​Damla received her BA degree in American Culture and Literature from Bilkent University in 2009, where she also obtained her MA degree in Media and Visual Studies in 2011. Before joining Istanbul Şehir University, she worked at Bilkent University School of English Language as an instructor. While working there, she earned her CELTA (Certificate of English Teaching to Adults) and ICELT (In-service Certificate in English Language Teaching) qualifications.

DAVID R. PERRY

​David received his BA from The University of the Arts, Philadelphia in Music Therapy. He received his TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certificate from Frankfurt, Germany. He worked as a Cambridge BULATS (Business Language Testing System) speaking and writing examiner. He worked as the education director of a language school in Istanbul. He worked at Okan University before joining Istanbul Şehir University. David is currently studying for the Cambridge DELTA.

DUYGU KORONCU

​Duygu completed her BA degree in American Culture and Literature from Istanbul University and received her teaching certificate from Marmara University. She also participated in the cultural programs of Saarland University and Kiril & Metodij University. After working in various institutions, she completed her MA degree at Yeditepe University in English Language Teaching. She worked at Arel and Yeditepe universities as an instructor. Duygu is currently enrolled in the collaborative PhD program of Marmara and Sabahattin Zaim Universities in Educational Management. Her academic interest is language acquisition and she has good command of German, Russian and Spanish.

EMRAH AKKURT

Emrah graduated from 19 Mayıs University English Language Teaching Department in 2000. He continued his study on use of IT in ELT and completed his MA in IT Aided Educational Technologies at İstanbul Aydın University. He has taught English since 2000 in colleges and universities. Emrah has taken part in curriculum development, teacher training and research as well as in the organization of many ELT conferences.

EMSAL ATEŞ ÖZDEMİR

Emsal received her BA degree in English Language and Literature in 1997 from Hacettepe University and earned her MA in 2005 in English Language Teaching from Mersin University. She worked at Ankara Tömer and Ankara University, Mersin University School of Languages and Mersin University English Language Teaching Department, İstanbul Technical University School of Languages before she joined İstanbul Şehir University. Emsal, who is still following her PHd studies on “The use of technology in English Language Teaching” at Çukurova University, worked as an educational technology consultant and gave in-service training at İstanbul Beykent Schools. Constructivist learning theory, Computer Assisted Language Learning, Moodle learning management system and the use of Web 2.0 technologies are among her interests.

EZRA JAMES MANNIX

​Prior to becoming an English teacher in 2009, Ezra spent his first five years after university as a writer and editor in New York City and Florida. With a BA in Journalism and International Studies from the University of Oregon as well as a TESOL certification, Ezra seeks to apply his journalistic training in teaching students to be succinct, clear communicators. He taught mostly business professionals in a variety of industries – from energy to medicine – prior to joining the ŞEHİR staff in 2011. An Istanbul resident since 2009, Ezra also was an international student at Middle East Technical University in Ankara in 2002-03.

FRANK PAYNE

​Frank earned his BA in International Studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1998 and his Master’s of Public Policy from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor in 2003.  He worked in the journalism sector for three years before earning his TESOL certificate in 2006 and has been teaching English in Istanbul since then.  Frank speaks English, Spanish, Turkish and some French.  He is currently studying for the Cambridge Delta.

FUNDA TATAR

​Funda received her BA from Ankara University, the Department of English Language and Literature in 1995, and her MA from Aston University in Applied Linguistics / Sociolinguistics in 2010. She received her CELTA in the UK in 2000. She has been teaching English since 1998 and has translated books from English into Turkish.

ANTHONY SUTHERLAND

​Anthony has taught English to people from many countries since starting his English teaching career in 2007. In 2010, he earned his MA degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) from the State University of New York at Albany.  He was also a rater/grader for the TOEFL writing exam. Anthony’s approach to teaching English is to use the students’ personal creativity to help them get to the next step in their English language learning journey.

GLENN RAI

​Glenn comes with a wide range of experience in major sectors such as aviation, hospitality and banking as a training and development manager before transitioning to teaching English as a Foreign Language. He holds an MA in English Language and Literature from University of London and has worked in several countries since receiving his CELTA in 2006. He joined Istanbul Şehir University in 2012 and is currently working on his Diploma in English Language Teaching (DELTA).

GÖKÇE BERKKAN

​Gökçe graduated from Bilkent University, Faculty of Humanities and Letters, English Language and Literature Department in 1999. She is a holder of a Hacettepe University English Language Teaching Certificate and a Cambridge In-Service Certificate in English Language Teaching and has been working as an English language instructor since 2004. Currently Gökçe is studying for the Cambridge DELTA.

GÖZDE CEMGİL

​Gözde received her BA degree from Marmara University, Department of English Language Teaching in 2002. She got her first MA degree from Doğuş University, Department of English Language and Literature in 2008 and a second MA degree from University College Dublin, Department of Anglo-Irish Literature and Drama in 2011. She worked at several language schools and universities before joining the ŞEHİR staff.

GÜLŞAH KISABACAK

​After graduating from Boğaziçi University Translation and Interpreting Studies in 2005, Gülşah received an English teaching certificate from Yıldız Technical University. The same year, she started to work as an English instructor at Zonguldak Karaelmas University. She returned to Istanbul in 2006. She worked at Bahçeşehir University for five years during which time she received an ICELT (In Service Certificate in English Language Teaching) and completed her MA in Adult Education from Boğaziçi University. Currently Gülşah is studying for the Cambridge DELTA.

HALE DEDE

​Hale received her BA and MA from Bilkent University, Department of English Language Teaching. Before joining İstanbul Şehir University, she worked at Hacettepe University School of Foreign Languages and attended academic prep program in the department of political science.

HARDY GRIFFIN

​Hardy received his BA in English from Wesleyan University, his MA from The City College of New York, and is currently in the dissertation phase of his PhD at Boğaziçi University. He began teaching English language classes in New York in 1998 and has been teaching and doing teacher training in Turkey since 2002, focusing on learner-based teaching and student motivation.

HENRIETA KRUPA

After graduating with honors in English Language and Literature from Istanbul University, Henrieta received her CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) and DELTA (Diploma in English Language Teaching to Adults) from Cambridge University, ESOL. She worked for the School of Foreign Languages, Yeditepe University, as an instructor of academic reading and writing skills, and she was the founding member of the Writing Centre where she also worked as a writing consultant. Currently Henrieta is working on her MA thesis in English Language and Literature. Her academic interests are English literature and fostering learner autonomy. She speaks six foreign languages.

İHSAN BUĞDAY

İhsan earned his BA from Marmara University, Department of English Language Education in 1998. He received his MA in English Language Education from Yeditepe University in 2010. He has been teaching English for 14 years. After working at some language and private schools, he worked at Yeditepe University for 11 years as a language instructor.

İREM ABİ GEDİL

​​İrem received her BA degree from Middle East Technical University, Faculty of Education, English Language Teaching Department in 2008. Between the years of 2007 and 2008, she worked for Wordtest Co. as a grammar test questions specialist. After completing her college education, she worked at Bilkent University, School of English Language, Basic English Department as an Instructor of English for two years. At Bilkent University, she received her ICELT (In-service Certificate in English Language Teaching) from Cambridge ESOL. Irem’s research interests are Computer Assisted Language Learning, the use of technology in ELT classes and contemporary methods in language teaching. Currently she is studying for the Cambridge DELTA.

AYŞİN İLTER

Ayşin earned her BA from Istanbul University, Department of American Culture and Literature in 2002. She got her English Teaching  Certificate from Istanbul University in 2001 and a CELTA (Certificate of English Language Teaching to Adults) from Cambridge University in 2007. In 2010, Ayşin completed her MA degree in English Language Teaching at Bahcesehir University, where she worked for six years as an English instructor.

JANIELLE WILLIAMS

​Janielle received her BA from Johns Hopkins University and a Master of Public Health from the Department of Epidemiology at Drexel University. Three years ago she left the US for Turkey, leaving behind rigorous work in the natural sciences in order to pursue her passion in the social sciences. She aspires to receive a PhD in English Language and Literature. She has travelled extensively, but considers Turkey a second home.

JOSHUA BRUENING

​Joshua was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, where he became an avid sports enthusiast and fostered his love for the ocean. In 2006, he received his BA in History with an emphasis on Education from Old Dominion University. After receiving his TEFL certificate, he moved to Turkey, where he has been living and teaching English to foreigners of various ages and levels. Joshua values the importance of education and applies his practice of inter-cultural dialogue to foster communication and understanding in the classroom environment. He hopes to achieve an MA in TESOL.

LEVENT BALCIOĞLU

​Levent graduated from Ankara University English Language and Literature Department with honors in 1998. In 2001, he completed his MBA (Master of Business Administration) at Başkent University. After working at various schools as an English teacher, he started working at Marmara University’s School of Foreign Languages in 2003. Between 2004 and 2011, he worked at Maltepe University’s School of Foreign Languages, where he also earned his second MA in ELT (English Language Teaching). He is currently studying for the Cambridge DELTA (Diploma of English Language Teaching for Adults). His interests include critical thinking skills and autonomous learning.

LINDA WILLIAMS

​Linda received her BA (Hons) in anthropology from the University of Adelaide, Australia and recently completed an MA in Literature and Professional Writing. She has a TESOL certificate and is currently working on her DELTA. Her personal goal is to complete a PhD in creative writing.

LUNA WALSH

​Luna holds a BA with majors on English Language & Literature, Social Science, General History and Bangla from the National University Bangladesh. She also has a CELTA certificate from Cambridge University. Over a 23 year career – 17 years have been teaching English to different age groups and training teachers and executives; the other six years of work experience has been in marketing, administration, human resources, and business development. Luna has worked in Armenia, Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Sudan and Eastern and Western Turkey.

MARIE-LOUISE XAVIER

Marie-Louise received her BA in Language and Communications from Curtin University, Western Australia. After working as a photographer and copywriter, she completed a Certificate IV in Instructional Multimedia and worked in print, CD-ROM and web site design, and animation and film for 15 years. Marie-Louise gained her Diploma of Education (English and Computer Studies) from Edith Cowan University in Western Australia in 2004. After teaching English, Media, and Drama in high school, and ESL students in Perth, Western Australia for four years, Marie-Louise completed the CELTA and came to Istanbul. She is interested in students developing a range of skills and abilities that enable them to deconstruct the world around them.

MAURICIO ESCOBAR

​Mauricio received his BA (1997) in Medieval European history and his MA (2000) in Spanish-Mexican history. He taught history at the university level in Los Angeles for two years, whereupon, he decided to work as a park ranger in Alaska, California, and Puerto Rico. Mauricio started teaching English in 2007 in South Korea and later moved to Istanbul due to his love for historical places. He became certified in TEFL (2009) and worked at Yeditepe as a language instructor of both English and Spanish. Currently, he is working on a historical novel partly based in Istanbul.

MEHTAP YAVUZDOĞAN

​Mehtap holds BA and MA degrees in English Teacher Education from Bilkent University (between 2004-2009). During her education at Bilkent she was awarded with scholarships by the Fulbright Academy and National Agency. . She worked as a full-time English teacher in the USA (as part of  TSTIP “Turkish Student Teaching Internship  Project” sponsored by Iowa State University and Bilkent University) and worked as a part-time English teacher in Sweden (as part of Erasmus program). Mehtap completed her CELTA at Bilkent in July 2009. She worked at Bilkent High School from 2009 to 2010; and at Bahçeşehir University from 2010 to 2012. Mehtap is currently doing the DELTA (Diploma in English Language Teaching to Adults).

MELTEM AKBULUT

​Meltem received her BA degree from the Foreign Language Education Department at Boğaziçi University in 2008. She started her MA in Adult Education at Boğaziçi University and graduated in 2011. While getting her master’s degree, she received her CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults). Meltem worked at Beykoz Logistics School of Higher Education for two years. Her research interests include second language education and educational leadership.

MERVE AYDIN

​Merve completed her undergraduate studies in Foreign Language Education at Middle East Technical University in 2008.  She received her CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) in 2010 and completed her MBA at İstanbul Kültür University in 2011. She worked as an English instructor at İstanbul Kültür University Foreign Languages Center for three years. She also taught at Brown Unıversity, U.S.A, as a Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant.

ARZU OYACIOĞLU

Arzu received her BA in Social Sciences from Boğaziçi University in 1984. She worked in the tourism and advertising sectors before becoming an English instructor. She completed the ELT certificate program with the British Council. Arzu worked for the School of Foreign Languages, Istanbul Technical University, for 20 years as an instructor and coordinator.

MÜJGAN BÜYÜKTAŞ KARA

​Mujgan graduated from the English Languages and Literatures Department at Bogazici University in 2007. Following graduation she worked as a Research Assistant in the English Language Teacher Education Department at Istanbul Aydin University, where she also received her MA degree, and as an EFL instructor at Bahcesehir University English Preparatory School. She received her CELTA (Cambridge Certificate of English Language Teaching to Adults) in London, UK, and her TEFL International TESOL Certificate in Florence, Italy. She is currently working on her PhD research on improving L2 writing skills through the use of technology at University of Amsterdam, Holland.

NASEER YAHYA

​Naseer completed his BA at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in Sociology of Education. He received his TESOL certification at the TEFL Institute in Chicago in 2008. He has been teaching in Turkey for the past three years. Naseer worked at Gaziantep Zirve University before he joined İstanbul Şehir University. He is currently studying for the Cambridge DELTA.

PINAR TANKUT

​Pınar received her BA degree in English Language Teaching from Middle East Technical University (METU) in 1997, and her MA degree in English Literature from the same institution in 2001. In 2010 she received an MA in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) from the Monterey Institute of International Studies, California.  She also holds a Certificate in CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning) and a University of Cambridge COTE (Certificate for Overseas Teachers of English). She has worked as an English instructor at Çankaya University and METU, and at the Monterey Institute. Her interests include teaching academic reading and writing skills, syllabus and materials design, and Computer Assisted Language Learning.

RICHARD VILE

​Richard received his undergraduate degree from the University of Toronto in History. After a short but intense career in advertising, his postgraduate degree was earned in Australia and his second career as a teacher began. Richard takes pride in the diversity of teaching experiences he has acquired from around the world and believes that his growth continues in the craft while being delighted to pursue further challenges in Istanbul.

SAM COSGROVE

​Sam earned his BS in Finance from Miami University in 2009 and his MA in Higher Education Administration from the University of Kansas in 2011.  While studying at KU he also earned his TEFL certification. For two years he worked as an academic advisor for 1st 2nd year students at KU and also worked as an English conversation leader for international students.  After graduating he moved to Istanbul and taught English at Fatih Koleji during the 2011-2012 school year. In his free time he enjoys traveling, taking Turkish courses, and outdoor sports.

SEAN MONTERASTELLI

​Sean received his BA degree from the history department at University of Santa Cruz California where his focus was ‘The making of the modern middle east’. After a short career as a tour guide in San Francisco, he decided to follow his passion for languages and world travel. In 2011, Sean received his TEFL degree in Istanbul and has been teaching English since then.

SIMON KINGSBURY

​Simon graduated with a BS degree from Otago Universty, New Zealand in 2002. He earned his TEFL certificate in 2008 and is currently enrolled in the Cambridge DELTA. He has been teaching English as a second language for nine years in East Asia and Turkey. In Istanbul, Simon has had the position of Head Teacher in a private language institution and has prepared students for TOEFL and IELTS exams. Simon believes enjoyment and motivation are key factors in the acquisition of any language.

TAMER AKAN

​Tamer received his BA in English Language Teaching from Marmara University, Department of Foreign Languages Education in 2004 and his MA in linguistics from Bogazici University in 2009. After graduating from Marmara University in 2004, he worked as an English instructor at Yildiz Technical University and Bogazici University School of Foreign Languages for 5 years in total. During the 2009-2010 academic year, he taught Turkish at New York University as a Fulbright scholar.

ZEHRA TOPRAK

​Zehra received her BA from Boğaziçi University in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) in 2000. After spending some years raising her family, she started her TESL MA program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2005. She taught written and oral communication classes as a teaching assistant while she completed her MA at the same university. Zehra taught English as a second language at a public school in Boston for two years until her return to Turkey in 2010.

ASLI ABAK

​Aslı graduated from Hacettepe University’s English Interpretation and Translation department in 2006. She studied Translation Studies at Hogeschool Gent in Belgium as an Erasmus exchange student in 2005-2006. She received an English Teaching Certificate from Hacettepe University and CELTA (Certificate of English Language Teaching to Adults) from Cambridge University in 2003. She completed her MA at Bahçeşehir University, English Language Teaching in 2010. She worked at Bahçeşehir University for five years as an English Instructor. Computer and technology-blended English teaching, mobile learning and students’ autonomy are some of the fields Aslı is interested in.

AYŞE GÜL YÜCEL

​Ayşe Gül received her BA in Foreign Language Education from Boğaziçi University and MA from Fatih University Sociology Department.  She taught English at American Cultural Association, Boğaziçi University, Fatih University, Beykoz Logistics School of Higher Education and Yeditepe University.  She also knows some French and Spanish. Ayşe Gül is currently studying for the Cambridge DELTA.

AYTEN KOLDEMİR AYDIN

​Ayten earned her BA in the Department of English Language Teaching from Canakkale Onsekiz Mart University in 2003. After teaching English ın Turkey for a couple of years, she moved to the USA, where she resided for sıx years. She received her MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) from the University of Washington in 2011. She taught English in the English Language Programs of UW and also worked as a CALL specialist at the Language Learning Center at the same institution. Ayten‘s academic interests include Language and Identity, Second Language Acquisition, Sociolinguistics and Computer Assisted Language Learning.

BEKİR ATEŞ

​Bekir received his BA in Foreign Language Education from Bogazici University in 2008. After working as a freelance translator for a year, he worked at İstanbul Kultur University as an English instructor for nearly three years.  He is interested in meta-discourse in academic writing and its functions. Currently, Bekir is doing his MA in Foreign Language Education at Bogazici University.

CEYDA GÜMÜŞ

Ceyda earned her BA and MA from Bilkent University, Department of English Teacher Education. During her education at Bilkent University, she was awarded with scholarships by the Fulbright Academy and National Agency. She worked as a full-time English teacher in the USA (as part of  TSTIP “Turkish Student Teaching Internship  Project” sponsored by Iowa State University and Bilkent University). After completıng her BA, she taught for a year in Scuola Media Statele Viale Dante in Italy as a part of her internship. After graduating from university, Ceyda worked at İhsan Doğramacı Vakfı Erzurum Bilkent Laboratory High School as an IB and IGCSE teacher.
